Tarifit Digital Infrastructure
Bringing Tarifit into the digital world
Tarifit needs more than individual applications to thrive digitally. It needs the underlying infrastructure that allows the language to be correctly represented, processed, displayed, localized, and supported across computers, software, and online platforms.
Open RIF works to improve and expand this infrastructure by contributing Tarifit support to the technologies and open-source projects that form the foundation of the modern digital world.
Building the foundations
Our work includes areas such as:
Unicode & character support
Helping ensure that Tarifit characters are properly represented and supported by Unicode and the wider software ecosystem.
Localization & internationalization
Working toward better Tarifit support in software through i18n and l10n, including language metadata, translations, locale information, and other resources required by modern applications.
Open-source ecosystem
Contributing Tarifit language resources and support to open-source projects so that future applications can build on existing work rather than starting from scratch.
Fonts & typography
Supporting the development and availability of fonts that correctly display Tarifit characters across different platforms and applications.
Keyboards & input
Making Tarifit easier to type by developing and contributing keyboard layouts for different operating systems and platforms.
Language data & resources
Creating reusable digital language resources that can support future software, linguistic tools, research, and other projects.
A language that works everywhere
Our long-term goal is for Tarifit to become a language that developers can support as naturally as any other language.
When a new application adds multilingual support, we want Tarifit to already have the necessary foundations: language identifiers, Unicode support, fonts, keyboard layouts, localization resources, and open language data.
The work may sometimes happen behind the scenes, but its impact can extend across many applications and platforms.
Built for the future
Digital infrastructure has a long life. A contribution made today can make it easier for someone else to build a keyboard, application, website, operating-system feature, or language tool years from now.
Open RIF therefore focuses not only on creating applications, but also on contributing to the systems underneath them.
Build the infrastructure once. Let others build on it.
Open by design
Wherever possible, our work is contributed to the relevant open standards and open-source projects under licenses that allow others to use, study, modify, and build upon it.
The objective is not to create a closed ecosystem around Open RIF. The objective is to make Tarifit easier for everyone to support.
